You've probably already heard of ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence. It's become a benchmark for everything from content creation to code generation, but today we'd like to shine a spotlight on another lesser-known AI that deserves just as much attention. Claude AI.
Developed by Anthropic, Claude AI is emerging as a promising alternative to ChatGPT. Why?
Simply put, Claude does the same things as ChatGPT, but with much higher quality answers, especially on one topic: code.
To give a little context, we at Digidop have tested and compared Claude in several development situations and are confident in both the accuracy and quality of its answers.
While ChatGPT tends to produce functional code, but not always highly optimized, Claude was often much cleaner and better structured.
In this article, we'll introduce Claude AI, show you how it differs from ChatGPT, tell you how to start using it today, and most importantly, share Digidop's feedback.
1. Understanding ChatGPT's features and functionality
Developed by OpenAI, ChatGPT is an advanced language model that leverages deep learning techniques to generate human-like responses. Based on the Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (GPT-3) architecture, ChatGPT trains on massive amounts of data to understand and generate natural language.
One of ChatGPT's key strengths is its ability to participate in open-ended conversations. It excels at generating consistent and contextualized responses, making interactions with users feel more human. And thanks to its large knowledge base, it can understand and answer questions on a wide range of topics.
However, it's important to recognize that ChatGPT has its limitations: it can sometimes give inaccurate or nonsensical answers, especially when faced with ambiguous or complex questions. It's also sensitive to initial input and can exhibit biased behavior based on the training data it's exposed to.
In the next section, we'll explore the features and capabilities of a competing chatbot model, Claude. Stay tuned to get a comprehensive understanding of both options so you can make an informed decision for your specific needs.
2. Understanding Claude's features and capabilities
Developed by a team of innovative engineers, Claude offers a powerful alternative to ChatGPT.
One of Claude's standout features is its ability to accurately handle complex queries. Sophisticated algorithms analyze and understand complex questions to ensure accurate and insightful answers. Whether you're discussing a technical concept or looking for in-depth explanations, Claude has the ability to provide comprehensive answers.
Claude also prides himself on his unbiased approach. The developers have strict measures in place to minimize bias and ensure fair and impartial answers. This commitment to neutrality sets Claude apart, making it an ideal choice for users who want an objective and balanced chatbot interaction.
3. Comparing Claude AI and ChatGPT model options
Claude and ChatGPT are the names of chatbot products, not specific LLMs. Users can choose to run different model versions internally when interacting with Claude or ChatGPT, such as using the web or mobile app or calling the API.
Claude
Anthropic offers an online version of Claude at Claude.ai, as well as an iOS app and developer API.
In addition to the free version, we offer two paid tiers of Claude with monthly fees of $20 per person for Pro, which targets individual subscribers, and $30 per person for Team, which targets groups of at least five subscribers.
In early March 2024 (after the release of Claude 2 in July 2023), we released our first major update, the Claude 3 model family.
On June 20, 2024, we released Claude 3.5 Sonnet, an update to our mid-range Sonnet model, and later in 2024, we released Claude model 3.5 Haiku.
According to Anthropic's benchmark tests, the Claude 3.5 Sonnet outperformed the Claude 3 Opus as well as competing models like the GPT-4o in several benchmarks.
The Claude 3 series has versions to meet different user requirements:
- Claude 3 Opus. The most advanced and expensive model, the Opus is available to Claude Pro and Team subscribers for $20 per month online and in the iOS app. It is also available to developers through Anthropic's API for $15 per million input tokens and $75 per million output tokens.
- Claude 3 Sonnet. Following the release of Claude 3.5 Sonnet in June 2024, Claude 3 Sonnet will be available to developers via Anthropic's API for $3 per million tokens and $15 per million tokens in a legacy model.
- Claude 3 Haiku. The cheapest model, Haiku, is available to Claude Pro and Team subscribers on Claude.ai and the iOS app. For developers using Antropic's API, Haiku costs $0.25 per million input tokens and $1.25 per million output tokens.
Claude 3.5 Sonnet is available for free on Claude.ai and the iOS app, with higher rate limits for Claude Pro and Team subscribers, allowing them to send more messages in less time. Through the API, this model costs $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens.
The knowledge cutoff for Claude 3.5 Sonnet is April 2024, and the knowledge cutoff for 3 Series models is August 2023. All Claude 3 models and Claude 3.5 Sonnet have a 200,000 token context window, or about 150,000 English words. According to Anthropic, these models can handle up to 1 million tokens for certain applications, but interested users should contact Anthropic for more information. Additionally, all models can analyze user-uploaded images and documents, but lack image generation, speech, and internet search capabilities.
All Claude 3 models and the Claude 3.5 sonnet are also available through Amazon Bedrock or Google Cloud Vertex AI managed service platforms.
ChatGPT
OpenAI offers a wider range of models than Anthropic, including several versions of the GPT LLM and specialized non-LLM models, such as Dall-E for image generation and Whisper for speech to text. ChatGPT is available online at ChatGPT.com, through the ChatGPT Android, iOS, and macOS apps, and through OpenAI's developer API.
For ChatGPT, OpenAI's main models are GPT-4o, GPT-4, and GPT-4o mini:
- GPT-4o. Released in May 2024, GPT-4o is a multimodal model that uses the same neural network to process text, images, and audio. In addition to text chatbot capabilities, it can generate images, analyze uploaded files, and browse the web. Users can also use GPT-4o to create a custom assistant, GPT.
- GPT-4. Before the release of GPT-4o, GPT-4 was OpenAI's most advanced model, and it's still a powerful option. Like GPT-4o, it can create images and search the internet, and it's also the only ChatGPT option that allows voice interaction until GPT-4o's voice capabilities are available to all users.
- GPT-4o mini. OpenAI's most recent release, GPT-4o mini, replaces the first model of ChatGPT, GPT-3.5. It is designed to be fast and cost-effective, but lacks the multimodal and internet browsing features of its predecessor.
All three models have a context window of 128,000 tokens. The GPT-4o and GPT-4o mini have a knowledge cutoff date of October 2023, and the GPT-4 has a knowledge cutoff date of December 2023.
ChatGPT users have free access to GPT-4o and GPT-4o mini, but GPT-4 is only available to paid subscribers. In addition, paid users are subject to higher rate limits when using GPT-4o and GPT-4o mini. Unlike Anthropic, OpenAI does not offer its model on Amazon Bedrock or Google Cloud Vertex AI.
OpenAI offers several pricing options for its paid plans:
- ChatGPT Plus for $20 per month for individual users.
- ChatGPT Team for groups of at least two users at $25 per month per person when billed annually.
- ChatGPT Enterprise for large enterprises with specific requirements. Organizations interested in ChatGPT Enterprise should contact the OpenAI sales team to discuss pricing.
API pricing varies by model, including fine-tuning, embedding and base language models, coding and image models.
4. Performance and reliability comparison of ChatGPT and Claude
In this section, we'll evaluate the performance and reliability of ChatGPT and Claude so that you can better understand the capabilities of both products in real-world scenarios.
First, let's talk about ChatGPT's performance. Developed by OpenAI, ChatGPT is very good at learning from a wide range of data sets to provide accurate and insightful responses. With its vast knowledge base, ChatGPT can cover a wide range of topics and engage in meaningful conversations. However, some users have reported that it can sometimes give incorrect information or irrelevant answers, which can affect the overall reliability of the system.
Claude's performance, on the other hand, has been praised for its ability to accurately handle complex queries. Its sophisticated algorithms analyze and understand complex questions to provide comprehensive and reliable answers. Users have noted that Claude consistently delivers well-informed answers that meet their expectations.
Anthropic and OpenAI are tight-lipped about the specific size, architecture, and training data of their models. Both Claude and ChatGPT are estimated to have hundreds of billions of parameters. A recent paper from Anthropic estimates that Claude 3 has at least 175 billion, and a report from research firm SemiAnalysis estimates that GPT-4 has over a trillion. Both models use a transformer-based architecture augmented by techniques such as reinforcement learning with human feedback.
To evaluate and compare models, users often rely on benchmark scores and LLM leaderboards, which measure a model's performance on a variety of tasks designed to test the capabilities of AI language models.
For example, Anthropic claimed that Claude 3 outperformed GPT-4 on a series of benchmarks, and that its Opus model outperformed GPT-4 for the first time on Chatbot Arena, a leaderboard that crowdsources user ratings of popular LLMs.
While user-generated rankings like Chatbot Arena tend to be more objective, benchmark scores self-reported by AI developers should be evaluated with a healthy dose of skepticism. Without detailed disclosure of training data, methodology, and evaluation metrics, which companies rarely provide, it's difficult to validate performance claims. And without full public access to models and training data, it's nearly impossible to independently validate and reproduce benchmark results.
Especially in a highly competitive market like the AI industry, there is always the risk that companies will selectively present benchmarks that favor their models and overlook less impressive results. Direct comparisons are further complicated by the fact that different organizations may evaluate models using different metrics for factors like effectiveness and efficient use of resources.
Ultimately, both Claude and ChatGPT are advanced chatbots that excel at language understanding and code generation. Most users will find that both are effective for most tasks, especially the most advanced options, 3.5 Sonnet and GPT-4o. However, the details of the models' training data and algorithmic architecture are not yet publicly available. This secrecy is understandable given the pressures of competition and the potential security risks of exposing model information, but it also makes direct comparisons between the two difficult.
At the time of writing this article, I have not yet had a conversation with GPT-4o, so the views that follow regarding ChatGPT may not apply to GPT-4o.
What do you think are the main differences between the two? I know a lot of people have complained that Claude has more rejections compared to ChatGPT, and I sympathize with that. However, the Claude 3 model seems to be a slight improvement in that regard. Despite that, I still prefer Claude between the two, and here's why.
- Claude is more personal, friendly, warm and empathetic. ChatGPT, on the other hand, feels too robotic.
- Claude is more expressive. If you raise an issue with Claude, he will specifically mention that there is a problem. ChatGPT, on the other hand, maintains a very neutral tone.
- Claude is more accommodating in conversation, while ChatGPT tends to be more rigid and stubborn in that regard. If you clarify something Claude missed or misunderstood in a previous question, he will acknowledge it in his answer.
- Claude doesn't refer to the state of the AI as often as ChatGPT, and responds better when you express warm emotions. ChatGPT can be described in a one-word description that starts with "as an AI language model".
In terms of reliability, both ChatGPT and Claude have undergone rigorous testing and optimization to minimize instances of inaccurate or nonsensical responses. However, it's important to note that no chatbot model is perfect, and there will be occasional errors or limitations.
In conclusion, both ChatGPT and Claude offer impressive performance and reliability, but Claude has the edge when it comes to handling complex queries and providing accurate responses. However, it's important to evaluate your specific needs and preferences before making a final decision.
5. Compare user experience and interface: ease of use, customization options, etc.
User experience plays an important role in the effectiveness of any chatbot model. ChatGPT offers a user-friendly interface that makes it easy for users to engage in conversations and navigate. Thanks to its intuitive design, even users with limited technical expertise can have a seamless experience.
Claude, on the other hand, offers a sleek and modern interface, ensuring visually appealing interactions. Customizable options allow users to personalize the chatbot's appearance and behavior based on their preferences. This level of customization adds a personal touch to conversations, enhancing the overall user experience.
In terms of customization options, ChatGPT offers limited control over the chatbot's behavior and responses. While it can be trained on specific data sets to improve performance in certain domains, the level of customization is not as extensive as Claude. With Claude, users have more flexibility to define the chatbot's knowledge base and behavior to meet their specific needs.
In conclusion, both ChatGPT and Claude offer user-friendly interfaces, but the customization options give Claude the edge when it comes to tailoring the behavior of your chatbot.
6. Pricing and Signup Options: ChatGPT vs Claude's Costs
Pricing and subscription options are important considerations when choosing a chatbot model.
ChatGPT offers a freemium model, allowing users to access basic features for free. Users who want more advanced features and higher usage limits can opt for the ChatGPT Plus subscription, which costs $20 per month. This subscription offers benefits such as faster response times and prioritized access to new features and improvements.
Claude, on the other hand, follows a tiered pricing plan based on usage. It offers flexible pricing plans, allowing users to choose based on their expected usage. Pricing depends on factors such as number of users, number of conversations, and customizations. We recommend contacting Claude's sales team for detailed pricing information.
When evaluating costs, it's important to consider both the subscription fee and potential additional costs, such as overage fees or custom development costs. Considering these factors will help you choose a chatbot model that fits your budget and business needs.
7. Claude and ChatGPT at a glance
Claude and ChatGPT are powered by similarly powerful LLMs and LMMs. However, they differ in some important ways.
ChatGPT is more versatile with features like image generation and internet access, while Claude offers cheaper API access and a larger context window (meaning it can process more data at once). Here's a quick rundown of the differences between these two AI models.
Claude | ChatGPT | |

To compare the performance of one LLM to another, AI companies use benchmarks, such as standardized tests.
OpenAI's GPT-4o benchmarking shows impressive performance on LLM-specific tests like MMLU, which measures undergraduate-level knowledge, and HumanEval, which measures coding ability. Meanwhile, Antropic published a head-to-head comparison of Claude, ChatGPT, Llama, and Gemini, showing the Claude 3.5 sonnet model beating GPT-4o in most tests.
While these benchmarks are undoubtedly useful, some machine learning experts speculate that these kinds of tests overstate the progress of LLMs.
As new models are released, they may (coincidentally) be trained on self-assessment data. As a result, they get better and better at standardized tests, but sometimes struggle when asked to figure out new variations of the same question.
I devised a head-to-head comparison to figure out how each model performed on a common task I use every day. Here's a high-level overview of what I found.
Task | Winner | Observation |
Creativity | Claude | Claude's preferred writing style is more human and less generic. |
Proofreading and fact-checking | Claude | Both are good at finding errors, but Claude is a better editing partner because he presents mistakes and corrections more clearly. |
Image processing | Tie | Neither Claude nor ChatGPT identifies objects in images with 100% accuracy, and both have problems with counting. If you don't need absolute accuracy, both models provide amazing insights into your uploaded images. |
Logic and inference | ChatGPT | From math to physics to brainteasers, both LLMs excel. However, for complex equations, GPT-4o is a more reliable partner than Claude 3.5. |
Emotions and ethics | Tie | While previous versions of Claude felt more "human" and empathetic, Claude 3.5 and GPT-4o take an equally robotic approach. |
Analysis and summary | ChatGPT | Officially, Claude 3.5 has a larger context window, but in my testing, GPT-4o was able to handle much larger documents than Claude, far exceeding its stated limits. GPT-4o also provided more accurate analysis. |
Coding | Claude | Claude 3.5 is a more powerful coding assistant, and the artifacts feature provides a convenient (and interactive) user interface that lets you see the results of your code immediately. |
Overall | ChatGPT | From basic DALL-E image creation tools to internet access and third-party GPTs, ChatGPT's features go far beyond Claude's standard offerings. |
