LINK TRACKING

Track how people respond to your shared links and use the data to guide your next marketing decision

After you distribute a link, see when clicks happen and understand the paths and environments that lead to visits. Use that data to make better decisions about content, channel strategy, and the landing experience.

CHALLENGE

Still judging link performance by instinct after you share it?

Looking only at total clicks makes it difficult to tell when response increased or which touchpoints led to visits.

Reviewing traffic and visitor environment data together gives you more context for planning your next content and channel strategy.

Hard to know when response happens

Without knowing when clicks rise or fall, it’s harder to choose the right timing for content and promotions.

Hard to identify traffic touchpoints

Without knowing which paths lead to visits, it’s difficult to decide which channels deserve more attention.

Hard to account for visitor environments

Without understanding common visit environments, it’s harder to decide which platforms and experiences to optimize first.

Not enough context for the next move

Total clicks alone rarely provide enough context to decide what to do next with your content and marketing.

WHAT IS LINK TRACKING?

What is link tracking?

Link tracking is the process of reviewing how people respond to shared links, understanding the paths and environments that lead to visits, and using those insights to inform future marketing activity.

Looking at click trends alongside traffic information can help you understand when response happens after publishing content and which touchpoints are leading to actual visits.

If you need to evaluate specific channels or placements separately, you can use distinct links or keep existing UTM parameters in the Destination URL.

  1. Share the link
  2. Review response
  3. Understand traffic and environment
  4. Make the next marketing decision
MARKETING DECISIONS

Link tracking data gives you evidence for your next marketing decision

Don’t stop at the numbers. Use click and traffic data to inform when to distribute your next content, how to manage channels, and where to improve the landing experience.

Identify when response is strongest

Use click trends to see when content and promotions gain more response, and apply those insights to your next distribution plan.

Understand traffic flow

Use available Referrer and traffic information to see which touchpoints lead to visits and use that context when planning your channels.

Optimize for visitor environments

Review common platforms and browsers to check whether your content and landing pages work well in the environments your visitors actually use.

TRACKING STRATEGY

Use separate links when you need clearer tracking

You don’t need a different link for every channel. When you need to measure a specific piece of content or placement separately, distinct links make the data easier to compare.

  1. 01

Use one link for an overall view

For general sharing, a single Vivoldi link lets you review clicks along with any available traffic information.

  2. 02

Use separate links for key touchpoints

If you want to evaluate a specific piece of content or placement separately, use a dedicated link for that purpose.

  3. 03

    Keep your existing UTM data

If your URL already includes UTM parameters, register the full Destination URL to preserve that campaign information while sharing a shorter link.

  4. 04

    Separate QR touchpoints when needed

Use different links for offline touchpoints such as events, print materials, or stores when you need to compare their response separately.

REFERRER & DIRECT

Traffic source information isn’t always available

When someone follows a link from a website, the Referrer may reveal the previous page or traffic source. However, apps, messaging services, browser privacy policies, and other environments may prevent Referrer information from being passed.

Direct doesn’t always mean someone typed the address manually. Visits from apps, messages, or privacy-focused environments where Referrer information isn’t available may also be recorded as Direct.

If you need to distinguish a particular channel or placement more clearly, consider using a separate link or your existing UTM parameters.

AUDIENCE INSIGHTS

Visitor environment data helps you evaluate the landing experience

Platform and browser data is more than a simple statistic. It helps you understand how visitors actually open your links and gives you a basis for reviewing the usability of the destination page.

If most visits are on mobile

Check first that CTAs, forms, and key content are easy to use on smaller screens.

If one browser dominates

Make sure the landing page and its key interactions work correctly in the browsers your visitors use most.

If environments behave differently

Check whether the content and destination page provide a consistent experience across platforms and browsers.

USE CASES

Put link tracking data to work in your marketing

Use link response by channel and touchpoint to plan your next marketing move.

Content distribution

After publishing blog or social content, review changes in click activity to help decide when to distribute your next piece of content.

Email & messaging

Use separate links for each newsletter or message to review click response for each send individually.

Ads & social media

Use available Referrer and link data to understand which touchpoints lead to visits and inform your channel strategy.

QR & offline

Use different links for events, print materials, stores, and other touchpoints you need to distinguish, then compare actual link visits.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Find answers to common questions about using link tracking in your marketing.

Use click trends and available traffic data to help evaluate content timing, channel strategy, and the landing page experience. If you need to compare specific channels or placements separately, you can also use distinct links for each one.

Yes. A single link can still show its clicks and any available Referrer information. However, if you need to clearly distinguish response by channel or placement, using separate links is recommended.

No. Referrer information may not be passed depending on the browser, app, or privacy settings. Visits without referral information may be recorded as Direct.

Direct can include visits from people who typed the address or used a bookmark, as well as visits from apps, messages, or privacy-protected environments where Referrer information wasn’t passed.

Yes. You can register the full URL, including its UTM parameters, as the Destination URL and use it as a short Vivoldi link. When someone clicks the link, they’re redirected to the registered Destination URL, so the existing UTM information remains intact.

Not necessarily. However, if you want to compare response by channel, content, or placement, using separate links makes the results easier to distinguish.

Yes. Use a separate Vivoldi link and QR code for each offline touchpoint you want to measure independently. The resulting link visits can then be reviewed separately. Scanning a QR code and actually opening the link are not the same event.
